Laguna Esmeralda: A Sparkling Jewel of Tierra del Fuego

Laguna Esmeralda is a must-see destination for nature lovers visiting Ushuaia. This stunning glacial lagoon, located less than 20 km (12 miles) from Ushuaia, is framed by the Albino Glacier and the peaks of Las Torres and Cordón Toribio. The hike to Laguna Esmeralda is considered one of the best in Tierra del Fuego, offering a rewarding trek through diverse landscapes. The trail begins in a lenga forest, characterized by native trees, and then opens into the Carbajal-Tierra valley, one of the largest peat bogs in South America. Boardwalks have been installed to protect the peat moss and make the hike easier. Along the way, hikers will cross the Esmeralda River and pass beaver dams, showcasing the impact of these non-native creatures on the ecosystem. As you approach the lagoon, the landscape transforms into a high mountain environment. The stunning Laguna Esmeralda is surrounded by forests and snow-capped peaks, with the greenish color of its waters resulting from sediments from the Albino Glacier. The lagoon is an ideal spot to rest, enjoy a snack, and take in the panoramic views. The hike is considered moderate in difficulty, with an overall walking distance of 8.7 km (5.4 miles) and an elevation gain of 252 meters (827 feet).
