Discover more about Lava River Cave

Venture into the Lava River Cave, a remarkable testament to Arizona's volcanic history. Located about 14 miles northwest of Flagstaff within the Coconino National Forest, this 0.75-mile-long lava tube was formed roughly 700,000 years ago when molten lava erupted from a volcanic vent near Hart Prairie. As the lava flowed, the outer layers cooled and solidified, creating a tunnel through which the molten center continued to flow. Once the eruption ceased, the remaining lava drained, leaving behind the hollow cave that stands today. Discovered by lumbermen in 1915, the cave, originally called "Government Cave," has been a popular destination for those seeking a unique underground experience. The cave's interior maintains a consistently cool temperature, ranging from 35° to 45° Fahrenheit (2° to 7° Celsius) year-round, making it a refreshing escape from the Arizona heat. Be prepared for slippery conditions near the entrance due to condensation. As you explore the cave, you'll witness fascinating geological features, including ripple marks on the floor, remnants of the lava flow, and lavacicles, or lava stalactites, hanging from the ceiling. The cave's height varies, with some sections reaching up to 30 feet and others requiring you to crouch or crawl. The cave floor is uneven, with loose rocks and debris, so sturdy footwear is essential. Remember to bring multiple light sources, as there are no artificial lights inside. Warm clothing is also recommended due to the cave's consistently cool temperatures. Please help preserve this natural wonder by refraining from littering or defacing the cave surfaces.
