The Orpheum Theater: Flagstaff's Historic Entertainment Hub

The Orpheum Theater, located in the heart of downtown Flagstaff, Arizona, has a rich and storied past. Originally constructed in 1911 by John Weatherford, a prominent Flagstaff pioneer, as the Majestic Opera House, it quickly became a cultural hub for the growing community. The theater's early years saw it hosting a mix of live performances, including plays and operas, as well as showing silent films. In 1915, a heavy snowstorm caused the collapse of the Majestic Theatre. Weatherford rebuilt the theater, and in 1917, it reopened as the Orpheum Theater. The newly renovated Orpheum boasted a larger seating capacity and improved facilities, solidifying its position as the leading entertainment venue in Northern Arizona. Throughout the 20th century, the Orpheum continued to evolve with the times, adapting to changing tastes and technologies. It served as a movie house for many years, showcasing the latest Hollywood blockbusters. In 1925, the Orpheum became home to Flagstaff's first radio station, KFXY, further cementing its role as a center for community engagement. After falling into disrepair and closing in 1999, the Orpheum was revitalized in 2002 by a group of local music enthusiasts. They transformed the space into a modern concert venue, while preserving its historic charm. Today, the Orpheum Theater hosts a wide range of performances, including concerts by major bands, theatrical productions, film screenings, and community events. With a capacity of 650 seats and additional standing room for up to 1,000 people, the Orpheum offers an intimate and engaging experience for audiences.
