The Herberger Theater Center stands as a vibrant beacon for the performing arts in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Established in 1989, the center was conceived as a key component in the revitalization of the area. Attorney Richard Mallery, with support from philanthropists Kax and Bob Herberger, helped found the center as a nonprofit civic treasure.
The Herberger Theater Center features three stages: Center Stage (seats 800), Stage West (seats 320), and the Performance Outreach Theater (Kax Stage, seats 120). Each year, the theater hosts more than 40 different performances and welcomes approximately 120,000 patrons, including 30,000 school-aged children. The center is home to several resident companies, and also hosts gallery shows and special events.
The Herberger Theater Center is committed to arts education, offering programs such as the Arizona Young Artists' Competition and collaborations with organizations like Free Arts for Abused Children. The theater strives to be accessible to all patrons, offering wheelchair accessibility, assisted seating, and assisted listening devices.
As a cultural center, the Herberger Theater is a home for diverse and creative arts activity. It collaborates with other nonprofit organizations to provide youth art competitions and creative camps, bringing arts education to young people so they can grow a lifelong appreciation for the arts and grow their own creativity, as well as become creative problem-solvers.

Getting There
Walking
The Herberger Theater Center is located in downtown Phoenix, easily accessible on foot from many nearby hotels, restaurants, and attractions. From the Phoenix Convention Center, walk north on 2nd Street for two blocks. The theater will be on your left, between Monroe and Van Buren Streets. Walking time is approximately 5-10 minutes. Be aware of street closures due to construction.
Public Transport
The Valley Metro Light Rail is a convenient way to reach the Herberger Theater Center. Exit the Light Rail at the Van Buren/1st Avenue stop. Walk east on Van Buren Street, then turn right onto 2nd Street. The theater will be on your left. The walk is approximately 6 minutes. A single ride on the light rail costs $2.00.
Ride Sharing
Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft offer a convenient way to get to the Herberger Theater Center. The ideal drop-off location is on the south side of the theater on Monroe Street, in the passenger loading area directly in front of the theater. A short ride from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to the Herberger Theater Center typically costs between $15 and $25, depending on traffic and demand.
Parking
The Herberger Theater Center does not offer on-site parking. However, there are several nearby parking garages. The Chase Tower Parking Garage (160 E. Monroe St.) is the closest. The Arizona Center Parking Garage (401 E. Fillmore St.) offers discounted parking with a pass purchased from the Herberger Theater Center's Box Office for $6, valid Monday-Friday from 5pm – 4am and all day on Saturday and Sunday. Street meter parking is also available, costing $1.50 per hour; meters are enforced from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm daily, including weekends and holidays.
