Liberty Market: A Gilbert Culinary Landmark
A historic Gilbert landmark serving up delicious American and Italian cuisine with a modern twist in a comfortable, community-focused atmosphere.
Liberty Market stands as a culinary cornerstone in Gilbert, Arizona, blending history with modern gastronomy. Housed in a building that has been a part of the community since the early 1930s, it began its life as a grocery store, becoming Liberty Market in 1936. Ben Ong, a Chinese immigrant, started working there in 1936 and later purchased it with his wife Mae in 1943, modernizing and expanding it in 1958. The Ong family operated the store until 1981, a time when it was the only grocery store within a 15-mile radius, serving a town of just 6,000 residents. Mae Ong also designed the neon sign with the star over the “I” in Liberty, which is still on display in front of the building. In 2008, the building was reborn as Liberty Market, an urban bistro, retaining its historic charm while offering a refined dining experience. The renovation maintained the original red brick, concrete floors, and exposed structure, enhanced with modern lighting. Today, Liberty Market is an award-winning, Zagat-rated restaurant known for its diverse menu featuring wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, salads, burgers, pasta, and gourmet entrees. It also boasts a premium espresso bar, a diverse beer and wine list, and house-made desserts. Liberty Market is a favorite for families, friends, and business people alike. Liberty Market is dedicated to quality food and community service. The restaurant provides physical and digital menus accessible via QR codes. Recent renovations have introduced a mid-century-inspired aesthetic, a full bar with select wines, fresh cocktails, and craft beer, booth seating, expandable tables, and an extended bar.
