Discover more about Maricopa Point

Maricopa Point, a stunning vista along Hermit Road, provides visitors with an immersive experience of the Grand Canyon's grandeur. Named in honor of the Maricopa Indians, known for their friendly interactions with early pioneers, this viewpoint offers more than just a pretty picture; it's a window into the canyon's layered history and breathtaking geological formations. Extending out from the South Rim, Maricopa Point presents a nearly 180-degree panorama, unobstructed by major landforms, allowing for clear views deep into the canyon. From this vantage, the Colorado River can be spotted, along with mesas like Dana Butte and the unique Battleship formation. Keen observers can trace sections of the Tonto Trail as it winds around Horn Creek and Garden Creek. Maricopa Point also offers a direct view of the historic Orphan Lode Mine. The mine operated from 1891 to 1967, initially extracting copper before becoming a significant uranium source. Although the mine is no longer active and is undergoing restoration by the National Park Service, remnants of its operations, including mining equipment and a cable line, are still visible. Accessible via the free Hermit Road Shuttle or the Rim Trail, Maricopa Point is a must-see for those seeking expansive views and a touch of Grand Canyon history.
