Discover more about Powell Point

Powell Point is a captivating viewpoint along the South Rim's Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park, offering visitors expansive, nearly 360-degree views of the canyon landscape. Named in honor of Major John Wesley Powell, the one-armed Civil War veteran and geologist who led the first documented expeditions down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869 and 1871-72, the point provides not only breathtaking scenery but also a connection to the canyon's rich history. The Powell Memorial, a granite structure dedicated to Powell and his crew, stands as a testament to their groundbreaking explorations. Visitors can climb the memorial for even more stunning vistas, especially during sunrise and sunset. From this vantage point, one can see the Bright Angel Trail winding down the canyon walls and even catch a glimpse of the lodges along the South Rim. With a sharp eye, you might even spot the sliver of the Colorado River that challenged Powell so greatly. Powell Point also offers a unique perspective on the human impact on the Grand Canyon. Remnants of the old Orphan Uranium Mine, a Superfund Environmental Cleanup Site, can be seen from the overlook, serving as a reminder of the area's mining history and the importance of environmental stewardship. Compared to the more popular Hopi Point, Powell Point tends to be less crowded, offering a more tranquil experience. The paved Powell Point Trail makes the viewpoint accessible to visitors with mobility challenges.
