Getting There

  • Walking

    To reach Plateau Point, begin at the Bright Angel Trailhead on the South Rim. From the trailhead, descend via the Bright Angel Trail for approximately 4.5 miles to Indian Garden. Continue past the Indian Garden ranger station and mule corrals. The Plateau Point Trail branches off to the left, heading west and crossing Garden Creek. Follow the trail for roughly 1.5 miles to reach Plateau Point. Note that this is a strenuous hike with significant elevation change, requiring a full day. There are no fees associated with hiking to Plateau Point beyond the park entrance fee.

  • Public Transport

    From various points within Grand Canyon Village, utilize the free shuttle bus system to reach the Bright Angel Lodge or the Village Transfer bus stop. The Bright Angel Trailhead is located between these two stops. The free Blue Route shuttle is available from the Visitor Center. From March through May, the Hikers' Express Shuttle offers early morning service from Grand Canyon Village to the South Kaibab Trailhead, with stops at Bright Angel Lodge, Backcountry Information Center and the Visitor Center. From the Bright Angel Trailhead, follow the walking directions to Plateau Point.

Plateau Point, located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, is a breathtaking overlook offering arguably the best views of the Colorado River from within the canyon. Reaching this point requires a strenuous 12-mile round trip hike from the South Rim, descending over 3,000 feet. The journey, primarily via the Bright Angel Trail, is a rewarding experience for fit and prepared hikers.The hike begins at the Bright Angel Trailhead, a well-maintained and popular trail. The path winds down through numerous switchbacks, offering ever-changing perspectives of the canyon's immense landscape. Along the way, rest stops with water and shade provide essential respite. The first major landmark is Indian Garden (Havasupai Garden), a desert oasis that was once home to the Havasupai people.Past Indian Garden, the trail continues for approximately 1.5 miles across the Tonto Platform to Plateau Point. This final stretch offers little shade, but the anticipation of the view ahead keeps hikers motivated. Upon reaching Plateau Point, the landscape opens up to reveal a stunning panorama. The Colorado River snakes through the Granite Gorge over 1,300 feet below, while towering buttes and temples rise dramatically in every direction.Plateau Point provides a unique perspective on the Grand Canyon's geology and scale. The point sits on the Tapeats Sandstone, a prominent rock layer that forms a platform overlooking the inner gorge. From this vantage, hikers can appreciate the canyon's layered rock formations and the powerful forces of erosion that have shaped this natural wonder over millions of years.Note that access to Plateau Point is currently closed through September 30, 2025, due to construction on the Transcanyon Waterline. During this period, hikers can still enjoy a portion of the trail, reaching Havasupai Gardens.
