Discover more about Brown Canyon Ranch

Brown Canyon Ranch, formerly known as the Barchas Ranch, is a historic site located in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountains, near Sierra Vista, Arizona. The land was first settled around 1880 by John Thomas Brown. Between 1905 and 1907, brothers James and Tom Haverty built the most prominent building, a three-room adobe home now known as the Brown Canyon Ranch House. Over the years, the ranch passed through several owners, including William and Margaret Carmichael, who rented it out to a local miner and a Yaqui Indian family. In 1946, Roy and Stella Rambo purchased the ranch and operated it as a cattle ranch. Samuel and Cecile Barchas acquired the property in 1957 and raised livestock there until 1997. In 1998, the ranch was deeded to the United States Forest Service. Today, Brown Canyon Ranch offers recreational opportunities such as hiking, birdwatching, and picnicking. Visitors can explore the historic ranch house, stroll along the pond, and hike nearby trails into Miller Peak Wilderness. The Friends of Brown Canyon Ranch, a group of volunteers, are dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the ranch. The site provides a scenic setting with a ranch house, outbuildings, a windmill, and ponds, allowing visitors to experience the area's early 20th-century atmosphere.
