Discover more about Brown Canyon Ranch

Brown Canyon Ranch, formerly known as the Barchas Ranch, is a captivating historical site located in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountains, just outside Sierra Vista, Arizona. This preserved ranch provides a unique window into the lives of early settlers and ranchers in the region. The land was first settled around 1880 by John Thomas Brown. Later, brothers James and Tom Haverty constructed the main three-room adobe house between 1905 and 1907, which stands as the ranch's most prominent feature today. Over the years, the ranch passed through several owners, each leaving their mark on its history. These included the Carmichaels, who rented the property to a miner named Harvey James and later to a Yaqui Indian family. The Rambos then operated it as a cattle ranch. Finally, the Barchas family owned it until 1997. In 1998, the ranch was deeded to the United States Forest Service.Today, visitors can explore the historic ranch house, wander around the grounds, and hike the nearby trails. The site also features a one-room adobe storeroom, a wooden corral, the stone ruins of a barn, and man-made ponds that now serve as a preserve for the endangered Chiricahua leopard frog. A small graveyard, known as the Brown Canyon Cemetery, and the remains of the Pomono Mine can be found further up the trail. The Friends of Brown Canyon Ranch, a dedicated volunteer group, actively supports the preservation and interpretation of the ranch's history.
