Discover more about Schieffelin Hall

Schieffelin Hall, located on Fremont Street in Tombstone, Arizona, is a remarkable survivor from the town's boomtown days. Constructed in 1881 by Albert Schieffelin and William Harwood, this adobe structure holds the distinction of being the largest of its kind in the southwestern United States. In its heyday, Schieffelin Hall was the entertainment and social heart of Tombstone. It was designed as a first-class opera house, theater, recital hall, and meeting place for Tombstone citizens. The hall could seat 450 people on the floor and another 125 in the gallery. When it opened, it was considered “the largest, most elaborate theater between El Paso, Texas and San Francisco, California”. The stage featured a drop curtain painted with a Colorado scene, which was considered a work of art. The hall hosted formal balls, theatrical performances, and other social events. Notably, Wyatt and Morgan Earp attended a performance at Schieffelin Hall just before Morgan's assassination. The Hall was scorched by a large fire that burned many blocks in 1882. Despite the fire and the decline of Tombstone's population, Schieffelin Hall persevered. It has served as home to the King Solomon Lodge #5, one of the founding Masonic Lodges in Arizona. Today, Schieffelin Hall continues to be a venue for plays, city council meetings, local social gatherings, fundraisers, and theatrical performances.
