Discover more about Phoenix Bat Cave

The Phoenix Bat Cave offers a unique opportunity to witness a natural phenomenon in the heart of the city. What appears to be an ordinary flood control tunnel transforms into a seasonal home for an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 Mexican free-tailed bats. These bats migrate to Phoenix every year from May to October to roost, mate, and raise their young. As the sun begins to set, the sky comes alive with the emergence of these nocturnal creatures. The bats leave the tunnel in droves, creating a swirling vortex as they ascend into the sky to hunt for insects. This nightly spectacle typically lasts for about 20 minutes, offering visitors a captivating glimpse into the natural world. The sight of thousands of bats silhouetted against the twilight is truly a memorable experience. While the Phoenix Bat Cave is a popular spot for bat watching, it's important to remember that it is a flood control tunnel. During heavy storms, water levels can rise rapidly, making the tunnel dangerous. Visitors should observe the bats from the designated viewing areas located outside the fenced perimeter. These areas provide a safe and informative vantage point for witnessing the bat emergence.
