The Arizona Museum of Natural History, located in the heart of downtown Mesa, is the premier natural history museum in Arizona. It showcases the natural and cultural history of the Southwestern United States through a variety of exhibits and activities. The museum features a three-story indoor waterfall on Dinosaur Mountain, complete with animatronic dinosaurs and a flash flood display that runs every 30 minutes. Dinosaur Hall exhibits skeletons of various dinosaurs, including a Tyrannosaurus bataar and a Triceratops. Visitors can also explore a recreation of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine, a real territorial jail, and exhibits about Paleoindian big game hunters. The Origins gallery takes visitors on a voyage through the timeline of the cosmos, highlighting major events in Earth's history. In addition to its natural history exhibits, the museum also focuses on the cultures of the ancient Americas, with exhibits about the ancient cultures of Mexico and the early cultures of Central America. Visitors can also explore a recreation of a Hohokam village, complete with pithouses and artifacts. The museum also offers hands-on activities, such as the Paleo Dig Pit and the Exploration Station.
