Civic Space Park: An Urban Oasis

Civic Space Park is a dynamic public space in downtown Phoenix, designed to integrate nature, art, and sustainable practices. The park arose from a downtown revitalization effort to connect Arizona State University's downtown campus with the surrounding city. Once a combination of old buildings and parking lots, the area was transformed into a verdant space for community engagement and relaxation. The park's design incorporates several sustainable features to combat Phoenix's extreme heat. Shade structures and trees will eventually cover 70% of the park's surface, providing cooling shade. Permeable surfaces reduce stormwater runoff, and solar panels generate 75 kilowatts of power for the park's needs. The centerpiece of Civic Space Park is 'Her Secret Is Patience,' a $2.4 million sculpture by artist Janet Echelman. This awe-inspiring artwork consists of multicolored fiber nets suspended up to 145 feet in the air, creating a dynamic display that moves with the wind. At night, colored lights illuminate the sculpture, offering a different visual experience. The A.E. England Building, a historic 1926 car dealership renovated as part of the project, now houses retail space and a community meeting room. Civic Space Park hosts a variety of events and activities, including yoga classes, film screenings, and arts and music performances. Its central location near ASU, transportation hubs, and downtown landmarks makes it a popular destination for students, residents, and visitors alike.
