Maricopa County Old Courthouse: A Phoenix Landmark

The Maricopa County Old Courthouse, also known as the Historic City Hall, is a captivating landmark in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The courthouse was designed by Shreveport architect Edward Neild, while the City Hall portion was designed by the Phoenix firm of Lescher and Mahoney. The unified exterior is constructed of terra cotta and poured concrete with bronze and polished granite details and red clay roofing tiles.Inside, visitors can explore exhibits that narrate the history of Maricopa County. The courthouse grounds feature landscaped gardens, offering a backdrop for photos and strolls. The Maricopa County Justice Museum and Learning Center is located on the sixth floor, in a restored cell block where prisoners like Ernesto Miranda and Winnie Ruth Judd were once held. The museum showcases watershed moments in Arizona's legal history.
