    Getting There

    Driving

To reach Peppersauce Cave, start from Oracle, Arizona. Take American Avenue to Mount Lemmon Highway. Continue onto Mount Lemmon Road past Camp Bonito. The road will turn into a dirt road as you approach Peppersauce Campground. High clearance vehicles are recommended due to the rough road conditions. From the campground, continue approximately 2.2 miles on the dirt road. Look for a sharp left turn with a small bridge; roadside parking is available here. There is no established parking area. Be sure not to block traffic. There are no fees for accessing the cave or parking. However, be aware that the final stretch of road can be challenging, especially after rain. Check road conditions before heading out.

    Walking

From the parking area near the bridge, locate the trail on the right side of the road, just before the bridge. Follow the trail back to a sign with a map of the cave. The main cave entrance is a short distance up the trail after a small climb. The annex entrance is a short distance up the wash on the right and up the hill to a small opening. The hike from the parking area to the cave entrance is short but involves some uneven terrain. There are no entrance fees for Peppersauce Cave.

Protect your head with a helmet, as there are low ceilings and uneven surfaces.
Explore with a buddy and inform someone of your plans.
Be respectful of the cave environment; pack out everything you pack in and avoid touching formations.

    Discover more about Peppersauce Cave

Peppersauce Cave is a popular destination for those seeking a more rugged and natural caving experience. Unlike commercial caves with paved paths and guided tours, Peppersauce Cave is a 'wild' cave, meaning it's largely undeveloped and requires explorers to navigate natural passages by walking, climbing, and crawling. The cave's history is somewhat mysterious, with Native Americans likely knowing of its existence for centuries. It gained public attention in 1948 when Desert Magazine published an article about it. A subsequent article in National Geographic in 1951 further increased its popularity.Inside, the cave maintains a relatively constant temperature of 70°F (21°C) and high humidity. Visitors can explore various features, including the 'Big Room,' an underground lake accessible by a 15-foot ladder, a rock slide, and the 'rabbit hole' or 'birthing canal'.Peppersauce Cave has faced challenges with vandalism and littering over the years. The Peppersauce Cave Conservation Project (PCCP) was established in 2001 to address these issues, organizing clean-up efforts and installing signage to guide visitors.Visitors should be prepared for a challenging and potentially dirty experience. Essential gear includes sturdy footwear, multiple light sources, gloves, and a helmet.
