Discover more about Yavapai County Courthouse

The Yavapai County Courthouse, located at 120 S Cortez St in Prescott, Arizona, is more than just a government building; it's a symbol of the city's history and a vibrant community hub. The current courthouse, completed in 1916, is a stunning example of Neoclassical Revival architecture, designed by William N. Bowman. Its impressive columns and symmetrical design evoke the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome. In the mid-1800s, Yavapai County initially rented a courtroom in a two-story wooden building. The first Yavapai County Courthouse was built in 1867. As the county grew, a new courthouse was needed, leading to the construction of the second Yavapai County Courthouse in 1878. However, this building suffered from shoddy construction and was beginning to fall apart. This ultimately led to the construction of the current Yavapai County Courthouse, which began in October 1916 and was completed in September 1918. The courthouse has been a stage for significant events, including Senator Barry Goldwater's announcement of his presidential candidacy in 1964. The Yavapai County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The Courthouse Plaza surrounding the building is a central gathering place, hosting over 130 events annually, from concerts to art fairs. The plaza also features a statue of Bucky O'Neill, a Rough Rider and former Mayor of Prescott, honoring the area's Wild West history. The plaza is graced by over 170 trees, including 127 American elms, providing a beautiful backdrop for community activities. Visitors can explore the plaza's historic timeline, bandstand, and public restrooms.
