Scottsdale City Hall: A Civic Symbol

Scottsdale City Hall, located on N. Drinkwater Blvd, serves as the chief administrative building for the city and a visual representation of Scottsdale. Designed by architect Bennie Gonzales and completed in 1968, the building embodies a distinctive blend of Southwestern and modern architectural styles. Gonzales, who disliked public buildings that appeared bureaucratic, aimed to create a welcoming and transparent space for the community.The building's exterior showcases a pueblo-style design with masonry and concrete, featuring recessed embrasures and slightly bulging columns. The interior incorporates a kiva, a design inspired by ancient Greek forums, for public meetings, promoting transparency and accessibility. The open design, with few walled-off spaces, further enhances this sense of openness. The Scottsdale City Hall and the adjacent Scottsdale Public Library were part of Gonzales's 1966 masterplan for the Scottsdale Civic Center complex. The buildings' design evokes indigenous Colorado Plateau building traditions, with stepped massing, parapets and sculpturally tapered walls reminiscent of ancestral Puebloan adobe houses.Over the years, Scottsdale City Hall has become a defining feature of the community and a significant example of Pueblo Revival architectural style. It stands as a testament to Scottsdale's history and its commitment to blending modern design with its Southwestern heritage.
