Exploring the Majestic Massacre Grounds Trailhead

Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start your journey from the nearest major city, Apache Junction. Head east on US-60 E for about 10 miles. Take exit 199 for AZ-88 N toward Apache Junction, and continue on AZ-88 N for approximately 9 miles. Turn left onto First Water Rd. Follow First Water Rd for about 2 miles until you reach the Massacre Grounds Trailhead, located on your left. There is no parking fee at the trailhead, but make sure to arrive early, as the parking lot can fill up quickly.

• Public Transportation

  For those relying on public transportation, take a Valley Metro bus (Route 30) from the Phoenix area to the Apache Junction transit center. From there, you will need to call a local taxi or rideshare service, as there are no direct public transit options to the Massacre Grounds Trailhead. Expect the taxi fare to be around $15-$25, depending on traffic and time of day.

• Bicycle

  If you prefer biking, you can rent a bicycle in Apache Junction. Once you have your bike, head east on US-60 E towards AZ-88 N. Follow the same route as by car, but be prepared for some steep hills and rough terrain along AZ-88. Ensure you have sufficient water, snacks, and a helmet for safety. The ride is approximately 12 miles one way and can take about 1-2 hours depending on your cycling speed.

• Hiking

  For experienced hikers, there are several trails leading toward the Massacre Grounds Trailhead from surrounding areas. If you are in the vicinity of the Superstition Mountains, consider taking the Peralta Trail or the Lost Dutchman Trail. These trails can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to reach the trailhead depending on your pace and fitness level. Make sure you have a map, enough water, and snacks for the hike.
