Car
To reach Sunset Lookout from any location in Tonto National Forest by car, start by navigating to the nearest major road, which is the AZ-87 (Beeline Highway). From there, head east on AZ-87 towards Payson. After approximately 20 miles, take the exit for the Forest Road 402 (also marked as Saguaro Lake). Follow FR 402 for about 10 miles until you reach the intersection with FR 143. Turn right on FR 143 and continue for another 5 miles. Look for signs leading to Sunset Lookout. The last few miles will be on a dirt road, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Ensure to check the weather conditions and road status before your trip as some roads may be impassable during monsoon season.
