Discover more about Allande Footbridge

The Allande Footbridge, located in the heart of downtown Tucson, serves as a tribute to Don Pedro de Allande y Saabedra, a pivotal figure in the city's early Spanish colonial history. Appointed as one of the first commanders of the Presidio of Tucson in 1777, Allande played a crucial role in the development and defense of the settlement. Crossing over Pennington Street, the footbridge links El Presidio Park with the Pima County government complex, providing a direct and pedestrian-friendly connection. The bridge not only eases movement between these two important locations but also serves as a reminder of the city's rich heritage. Allande's contributions extended beyond his military leadership. He personally financed early construction efforts at the Presidio, which became the largest Spanish fort in the Southwest. In 1782, during an attack by 600 Apache warriors, Allande was severely wounded but continued to direct the defense of Tucson, saving the settlement from destruction. The footbridge stands as a lasting symbol of his courage and dedication. While exploring the area, visitors may notice the name sometimes spelled 'Allende,' but 'Allande' is the correct spelling. The bridge is part of the Turquoise Trail, a historical walking tour of downtown Tucson, making it easily accessible to those exploring the city's historic sites. Nearby attractions include the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum and the Tucson Museum of Art, offering further insights into the region's history and culture.
