Discover more about Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site marks a watershed moment in the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1957, this operating high school became the center of the nation's attention when nine African American students, known as the Little Rock Nine, attempted to integrate the all-white school following the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision. Governor Orval Faubus initially deployed the Arkansas National Guard to block the students' entry, leading to a confrontation with the federal government. President Dwight D. Eisenhower ultimately sent in federal troops to ensure the Little Rock Nine could attend classes. The events that unfolded here tested the nation's commitment to equal rights and had a lasting impact on the course of American history. The site includes a visitor center with exhibits detailing the history of the crisis through interviews, news footage, and recordings. Visitors can walk the grounds, reflect at the Commemorative Garden, and see the Magnolia Mobil Gas Station across the street, which served as a media hub during the events. While the high school remains an active educational institution with over 2,500 students, visitors can experience the exterior and surrounding areas, connecting with the powerful story of the Little Rock Nine and their fight for equal access to education.
