Discover more about Historic Arkansas Museum

The Historic Arkansas Museum (HAM), originally known as the Arkansas Territorial Restoration, opened in 1941 and stands as the first state-supported history museum in Arkansas. Founded by Louise Loughborough, the museum's mission is to preserve and present the early history of Arkansas and its artistic heritage. The museum encompasses a city block with several historic buildings, including the oldest building in Little Rock, the Hinderliter Grog Shop, dating back to 1827. Other notable structures include the McVicar and Brownlee Houses from the 1840s, and a reconstruction of the 1820s Arkansas Gazette print shop. The Plum Bayou Log House, an 1850s plantation house, was relocated to the museum grounds from Scott, Arkansas. Costumed interpreters and living history demonstrations provide an immersive glimpse into Arkansas's past. Inside the Museum Center, visitors can explore galleries filled with Arkansas-made treasures, including furniture, quilts, Bowie knives, and paintings. Exhibits like "We Walk in Two Worlds" showcase the history and culture of the Caddo, Osage, and Quapaw Native American tribes. The updated Knife Gallery displays over 50 remarkable blades, including the famous Bowie No. 1. Changing exhibits cover a range of topics, ensuring a fresh experience with each visit.
