Lake Catherine State Park, a 2,180-acre recreation area, is located on the southern shore of Lake Catherine, approximately eight miles southeast of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Established in 1935, the park's origins are intertwined with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), who began construction in 1937. The CCC's legacy is visible in the park's rustic architecture, including stone-and-wood cabins, bridges, and other structures.Lake Catherine itself was created in 1924 by the construction of Remmel Dam on the Ouachita River. The park offers a diverse range of activities, including boating, fishing, and water sports. Anglers can find largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, crappie, bream, catfish and walleye in the lake. The park also features a full-service marina (open in the summer), a boat launch, and kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals available year-round.For those who prefer land-based activities, Lake Catherine State Park boasts several hiking trails that wind through the Ouachita Mountains. These trails offer varying levels of difficulty and scenic views of the lake, forests, and waterfalls. The Falls Branch Trail, in particular, is a popular choice, leading to the picturesque Falls Creek Falls. Other trails include the Dam Mountain Trail and the Horseshoe Mountain Trail.Lake Catherine State Park also provides various accommodation options, including cabins, campsites, and a yurt. The park has 20 fully equipped cabins, some of which feature fireplaces. The campground offers 70 campsites, with both Class AAA and Class B options available. Many campsites are located on the lakeshore.Visitors can also explore the park's history at the nature cabin, which houses exhibits about the cultural history and natural environment of the park. During the spring, summer, and fall, park interpreters offer guided hikes, lake cruises, nature talks, and demonstrations.
