Discover more about Headquarters House

Headquarters House, located on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas, is a tangible link to the tumultuous Civil War era. Built in 1853 by Judge Jonas Tebbetts and his wife, Matilda, the house is an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture in Arkansas. The home features fluted columns and dentil trim, reflecting the elegance of the period. During the Civil War, the Tebbetts family, who were Union sympathizers, were forced to flee, and their home was occupied by both Union and Confederate troops. The house was at the center of the Battle of Fayetteville in 1863, sustaining damage from cannon fire. A preserved doorway still bears the scar of a minie ball. Today, Headquarters House is owned and operated by the Washington County Historical Society. Visitors can tour the house and grounds, viewing period furnishings, a doll collection, and the Archibald Yell Law Office, which was moved to the property in 1992. The surrounding gardens, maintained by the Washington County Master Gardeners, offer a peaceful setting for reflection.
