Originally opened in 1939 as the Joseph Taylor Robinson Memorial Auditorium, it was named in honor of the late Arkansas Governor and U.S. Senator, Joseph Taylor Robinson. The center was a project of the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression, showcasing Art Deco features and innovative technology for its time.
Throughout its history, Robinson Center has hosted a wide array of famous performers, including Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as notable figures like First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The venue has undergone several renovations, including a significant $70 million renovation completed in 2016, which improved the theater, expanded lobby areas, and added a new ballroom overlooking the Arkansas River. The renovation seat count is about 2,214.
