Discover more about Caney Creek Wilderness

Caney Creek Wilderness, located on the southern edge of the Ouachita National Forest, is a protected area encompassing 14,460 acres of the Ouachita Mountains. Designated by Congress in 1975, it was the first wilderness area in Arkansas. The wilderness is characterized by its rugged terrain, clear mountain streams, and dense, biodiverse forests. The area's main drainages, Caney Creek and Short Creek, flow across the wilderness before emptying into the Cossatot River on the western boundary. These creeks are separated by steep ridges that offer stunning views of the surrounding region. The landscape features occasional sandstone outcroppings, adding to the area's unique charm. The wilderness boasts exceptional air and water quality, as well as old-growth forests and excellent vistas. The high rainfall in the area contributes to its biodiversity, supporting a variety of plant and animal life. The forests are home to beech, large pines, and bottomland hardwoods. Visitors can explore the wilderness via three main trails: the Caney Creek Trail, the Buckeye Trail, and the Tall Peak Trail. The Caney Creek Trail, which generally follows the Caney Creek drainage, crosses the creek 13 times. The Buckeye Trail climbs Buckeye Mountain, offering views of the forest and surrounding landscape. The Tall Peak Trail climbs to a restored lookout tower, providing panoramic views. The Caney Creek Wilderness is a place for solitude and primitive recreation. The trails are not marked or signed, requiring visitors to have a map and compass. Mountain bikes and motorized equipment are prohibited in the wilderness.
