Discover more about Powell Bridge

Nestled in the Ozark Mountains near Powell, Missouri, the Powell Bridge is a testament to early 20th-century engineering and community spirit. Constructed in 1914-1915 by the East St. Louis Bridge Co., the single-lane, pin-connected Pratt through truss bridge officially opened on August 16, 1915. It provided a reliable crossing over Big Sugar Creek, replacing the often-impassable Bentonville Hollow Ford. The bridge played a vital role in the development of the surrounding area for decades. However, as transportation needs evolved, its limitations became apparent. With a 3-ton load limit and only one lane, it couldn't accommodate large agricultural equipment or heavy trucks. Faced with the prospect of demolition, local residents formed a not-for-profit organization and successfully petitioned the county to save the historic structure. In 2015, a new two-lane bridge was built alongside the Powell Bridge, which was then transferred to the Powell Historical Preservation Society and adapted for pedestrian use. Today, visitors can stroll across the bridge, appreciating its historic architecture and the scenic beauty of Big Sugar Creek. The surrounding area offers opportunities for leisurely walks, picnics, fishing, and hiking.
