Discover more about Jewel Moore Nature Reserve

The Jewel Moore Nature Reserve (JMNR) stands as a living testament to the natural history of Conway, Arkansas. Preserving 18 acres of the original Conway Prairie, the reserve provides a glimpse into the region's landscape before development. In the late 1970s, Dr. Jewel Moore, a UCA Biology Professor, recognized the area's value as a teaching tool. The reserve became a hands-on learning environment, and in 1980, the Biology Department successfully requested the UCA Board of Trustees to set aside an 8-acre tract. This was expanded to the current 18 acres in 2004. The JMNR now holds more plant species than any other green space or park in Conway–over 235 species have been identified there. Visitors can explore the JMNR via walking trails that wind through both prairie and woodland habitats. The prairie showcases native wildflowers that support a diverse community of insect pollinators. The woodlands offer a shady respite, especially welcome during the hot Arkansas summers. Benches and seating areas are placed throughout the reserve, inviting visitors to relax and appreciate the natural surroundings. The JMNR plays a vital role in the local ecosystem. The prairie acts as a natural sponge, absorbing rainfall and reducing runoff, which helps to prevent flooding. The reserve also serves as a valuable educational resource, teaching visitors about the importance of prairie conservation and the region's natural heritage.
