Discover more about The Bernice Garden

The Bernice Garden, located at the corner of Daisy Bates Avenue and South Main Street in downtown Little Rock, is a unique and inviting space that celebrates community, sustainability, and local art. Founded in 2007 by Anita Davis, the garden is named after the Bernice Building and Davis' grandmother, both named Bernice. Davis envisioned a gathering place and revitalized an empty lot into what many now call a hidden gem of Little Rock. The garden features a collection of sculptures crafted by Arkansas artists, often using sustainable, recycled, or "green" materials, reflecting the spirit, nature, and history of the state. These sculptures, along with mosaics, rock formations, and a handcrafted sign, create a multi-staged development plan for the space. A large wooden canopy, constructed in 2011 from reclaimed wood, serves as a centerpiece and provides a shaded area for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The Bernice Garden hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a popular Sunday farmers' market from April through November. The farmers' market offers an open community space for local growers to sell sustainably raised produce, as well as cheeses, prepared foods, and other goods. The garden is also available for rent for weddings, receptions, dinner parties, concerts, and other special occasions. The location has a rich history. The lot was once part of the Augustus Garland-Mitchell House property and likely contained the outdoor kitchen and gardens. The Augustus Garland House was built in 1873 by Augustus Garland, who later became governor, senator, and the first Arkansan to serve on a Presidential Cabinet. Whether you're looking to admire art, shop for local goods, attend a community event, or simply relax in a peaceful setting, the Bernice Garden offers a welcoming and enriching experience for all.
