Ardvi Monastery: A Sanctuary of History and Serenity

Ardvi Monastery, or St. Hovhannes Monastery, is a historical and spiritual landmark located in the village of Ardvi in the Lori region of Armenia. The monastery's origins trace back to the 8th century, with construction and expansions continuing through the 17th century. It is also called St. Hovhan Odzneci or Srbanes monastery. The monastery is closely associated with Hovhannes Odznetsi (717-728), a prominent theologian, reformer, and the chief bishop of Armenia, who was later canonized as a saint. The complex comprises two churches connected by a common wall, a bell tower, monastic buildings, and khachkars (traditional Armenian cross-stones). The surrounding landscape enhances the monastery's serene atmosphere, offering panoramic views of rolling hills and distant mountains. Visitors can explore the grounds, immerse themselves in the natural beauty, and experience a sense of peace and connection to the past. The monastery also gained recognition as a filming location for Sergei Parajanov's renowned movie, 'The Color of Pomegranates'. Visitors can explore the two buildings, one featuring a small doorway leading to a chamber and the other still in use with candles burning inside. The compound features a statue at the entrance.
