Discover more about Haghpat Monastery Complex

The Haghpat Monastery, also known as Haghpatavank, is a medieval Armenian monastery complex built between the 10th and 13th centuries. Founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh, wife of King Ashot III the Merciful, in 976 AD, it is a remarkable example of Armenian religious architecture. The monastery's location, chosen for both protection and monastic humility, overlooks the Debed River in the Lori region of northern Armenia. The complex includes several significant structures : * **Surb Nshan Cathedral:** The oldest and largest church in the complex, founded in 976. It exemplifies 10th-century Armenian architecture, with a central dome resting on four imposing pillars. Frescoes are still visible over the main altar. * **St. Gregory Church:** Dates back to 1005 and features smooth decorative arcatures and triangular niches. * **Chapel of St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God):** Constructed in the 12th-13th centuries. * **The Scriptorium:** Built in 1063, this is where monks preserved ancient texts. * **Refectory:** A 13th-century cafeteria that could accommodate 150 monks. * **Bell Tower:** A three-story structure built in 1245, one of the oldest of its kind in Armenia. Haghpat Monastery was not only a religious center but also a major center for learning. The monastery housed a rich collection of manuscripts, with premises for copying and studying them. During invasions, these manuscripts were hidden in caves, some of which remain undiscovered. The monastery has faced damage from earthquakes and attacks throughout its history but has been largely restored. Today, Haghpat Monastery stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, captivating visitors with its architectural mastery and spiritual atmosphere.
