Khorakert Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Treasure

Khorakert Monastery, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, represents a significant example of Armenian medieval architecture. The monastery is located on the western slope of Mount Lalvar, near the village of Jiliza, in the Lori region. While geographically situated in Georgia, its architectural style and historical significance firmly root it in Armenian culture. The main church, dedicated to St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), is the primary structure within the complex. Khorakert's location has historically made it somewhat inaccessible. The monastery is surrounded by forest and is near the Georgian border. Today, access is only possible through Georgia, requiring advance coordination and special permits.
