    Discover more about Khorakert

Khorakert Monastery, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, represents a significant example of Armenian medieval architecture. The monastery is located on the western slope of Mount Lalvar, near the village of Jiliza, in the Lori region. While geographically situated in Georgia, its architectural style and historical significance firmly root it in Armenian culture. The main church, dedicated to St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), is the primary structure within the complex. The monastery complex includes remnants of a refectory, chapels and a secret passage leading to a gorge, hinting at a rich, and at times turbulent, past. The design of the main temple is unique, featuring a dome with intersecting arches forming a six-pointed star, adorned with stalactite-shaped ornaments. This distinctive feature sets it apart from other Armenian churches. The vestry, added in 1257, showcases a unique design with intersecting arches spanning the entire hall. Khorakert's location has historically made it somewhat inaccessible. The monastery is surrounded by forest and is near the Georgian border. Today, access is only possible through Georgia, requiring advance coordination and special permits. Despite its remote location, Khorakert Monastery remains a compelling destination for those interested in exploring Armenian architectural heritage.
