Discover more about Amberd fortress

Amberd Fortress, meaning "fortress in the clouds" in Armenian, is a remarkable historical site located 34 km from Yerevan on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats, at an elevation of 2,300 meters. This strategic location, at the confluence of the Arkashen and Amberd rivers, made it a vital defensive point for the Armenian Kingdom.Construction of the fortress began in the 7th century by the Kamsarakan princes. In the 10th century, it came under the control of the Pahlavuni family, who fortified the complex and constructed the Church of Astvatsatsin (Holy Virgin) in 1026. The fortress was captured by Seljuks in the 11th century, liberated by Armenian-Georgian forces in 1196, and ultimately destroyed by Mongols in the 13th century. Despite its turbulent history, Amberd remains an enduring symbol of Armenian resilience. The complex includes the castle, church, and a bathhouse. The three-story castle, built with massive basalt stones, once covered 1,500 square meters. The Church of Astvatsatsin, with its cruciform interior and modest exterior decorations, is a fine example of 11th-century Armenian architecture. Excavations have revealed underground passages and a water supply system, showcasing the ingenuity of medieval engineers. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, admire the stunning views, and imagine life in this once-impregnable fortress.
