Discover more about Tegher Monastery

Tegher Monastery, also known as Tegheri Vank, is a captivating monastic complex dating back to the early 13th century. Situated on the southeastern slopes of Mount Aragats near the village of Tegher, it stands as a testament to Armenian medieval architecture and spiritual heritage. The monastery was commissioned by Princess Khatun, also known as Mamakhatun, wife of Prince Vache I Vachutian, who acquired the Aragatsotn district. The skilled architect Vardapet Aghbayrik, also responsible for Saghmosavank and Hovhannavank monasteries, designed Tegher. The complex is built primarily of dark gray basalt, lending it a somber yet dignified appearance. The main church, dedicated to Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), was completed in 1213 and features a cruciform plan. Unusually, the narthex (gavit) is larger than the church. Two small domed chapels adorn the roof of the narthex, creating a unique three-domed silhouette. Inside, the monastery is sparsely decorated, enhancing its spiritual atmosphere. Carved khachkars (cross-stones) can be seen near the entrance of the Surb Astvatsatsin Church.Tegher Monastery offers panoramic views of the Ararat Valley and the Byurakan Observatory. The village of Tegher was once known as Degher, named for the medicinal herbs that grew in the area. A building near the monastery served as a hospital for Armenian soldiers. Princess Mamakhatun is buried at the entrance of the main temple. The monastery complex was once enclosed by fortress walls, but these were damaged in a 1949 earthquake. Today, Tegher Monastery is under the care of the Armenian Apostolic Church, with services, baptisms and wedding ceremonies still performed.
