Located in the Aragatsotn Province, between the villages of Yernjatap and Hartavan, the Astvatsynkal Monastery stands as a testament to Armenia's rich spiritual and architectural heritage. The monastic complex was constructed between the 4th and 13th centuries, with the oldest church, St. Astvatsatsin, dating back to the 5th century. In the early 13th century, the church underwent reconstruction by the Vachutyan dynasty, who established the monastic complex. The monastery features a large gavit (narthex) built around 1250, showcasing Armenian architecture with muqarnas designs, reflecting the influence of Islamic architecture. Examples of similar designs can be found in Geghard Monastery and Gandzasar Monastery. The gavit collapsed during the 1988 earthquake but has since been reconstructed. The complex also includes tombstones and cross-stones (khachkars) from the 12th to 15th centuries. Visitors can explore the grounds, discover ancient relics, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The monastery provides a tranquil environment for contemplation and reflection, enhanced by the sounds of nature. Today, the monastery is undergoing reconstruction, aiming to preserve its simplicity and ancient mystery.
