Discover more about Aparan Reservoir

Aparan Reservoir, also known as the Aparan Dam, was constructed in the 1960s during the Soviet era to address water scarcity and support agriculture. The reservoir is fed by the Kasagh River and several other rivers, and it is the largest artificial reservoir in Armenia, covering an area of 7.9 square kilometers. Today, Aparan Reservoir is a popular tourist destination known for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy fishing, hiking, and camping in the surrounding area. The reservoir is home to various fish species, making it a great spot for anglers. Nature lovers can explore the nearby trails and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The reservoir also provides a serene setting for picnics, leisurely walks, and photography. One of the unique features near the Aparan Reservoir is the Church of Saint Paul and Peter, a 5th-century church that is partially submerged in the reservoir's waters for a few months every year. During the construction of the reservoir, the stones of the church were numbered for relocation, but due to the risk of possible damage, it was left on its site. Spectators from around Armenia come to witness the battle between the water and the stone, enjoying the scenic views around the reservoir.
