Nestled on the border between the Lori and Shirak provinces of Armenia, Trchkan Waterfall is a breathtaking natural wonder. Also referred to as Chichkhan Waterfall, it is formed by the Chichkhan River, a left tributary of the Pambak River. The waterfall plunges from a height of 23.5 meters, making it one of the country's tallest and most voluminous waterfalls. The name 'Trchkan' is derived from a local legend. Villagers once witnessed trout (karmrakhayt) swimming upstream against the strong current of the Chichkhan River, leaping over the falls during spawning season. This incredible sight led to the waterfall being named 'Trchkan,' which roughly translates to 'leaping' or 'jumping.' The area surrounding Trchkan Waterfall is known for its stunning natural beauty. The falls have been a protected natural monument since 2008, with a specially protected zone established in 2011. In 2011, the waterfall gained national attention when there was a decision to construct a hydroelectric power plant upstream from the falls. A group of concerned citizens formed the “Save Trchkan Waterfall” initiative, and with the help of many civil organizations, they managed to stop the construction of the Hydroelectric power plant. Visitors can explore the area and enjoy the picturesque landscapes. The waterfall is especially impressive in the spring when the snow melts and the river is at its fullest. It's a popular destination for those seeking a connection with nature and an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
