Saint Hovhannes Chapel: A Pilgrimage to Hartagyugh

Saint Hovhannes Chapel, also known as Ghaltakhchi, is located near the village of Hartagyugh in the Lori Province of Armenia. This sanctuary holds a special place in the hearts of pilgrims and visitors. Situated on one of the inaccessible heights of the Pambak Range, reaching the chapel requires a journey of approximately 3 kilometers on foot, typically taking around 1.5 hours. Despite its remote location, the chapel has become an increasingly popular destination for those seeking spiritual solace and blessings. Tradition holds that the relics of Hovhannes the Baptist were enshrined here in the 13th century. The original chapel was destroyed multiple times during the Soviet era and was last renovated in 1958. What makes this site particularly striking is the multitude of khachkars (Armenian cross-stones) that surround the chapel. These stones have been erected by pilgrims over the years to mark the fulfillment of their vows and wishes. The presence of these khachkars is a powerful testament to the enduring faith and gratitude of the Armenian people. It is believed that the chapel existed even before the settlement of Western Armenians in the area, solidifying its historical and religious significance. Today, St. Hovhannes Chapel is considered one of the seven prominent places of pilgrimage in Eastern Armenia.
