Discover more about Jermuk Waterfalls

Jermuk Waterfall, cascading down the mountainside in the resort town of Jermuk, is one of Armenia's most picturesque natural wonders. Also known as "Mermaid's Hair," the waterfall plunges from a height of approximately 70 meters, creating a breathtaking spectacle as it flows over the layered rocks. Jermuk has been known as a healing retreat since ancient times, with its mineral-rich waters attracting visitors seeking therapeutic benefits. The town gained prominence as a spa destination during the Soviet era, drawing travelers from across the Soviet Union. The waterfall has always been a natural attraction, enhancing the town's therapeutic appeal. Legends surround the origin of the waterfall's unique name. One tells the story of a nobleman's daughter who fell in love with a shepherd. To meet in secret, she would lower her long hair from the castle walls. When the nobleman discovered their love, he cursed her, declaring that if she ever used her hair to meet the shepherd again, she would turn into a mermaid. One night, she threw her hair down to her lover, and the curse was fulfilled: she transformed into a mermaid, and her hair became the cascading waterfall. Today, Jermuk Waterfall continues to attract visitors with its natural beauty and historical significance. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, photography, and enjoying the fresh mountain air. The waterfall is especially impressive in the spring when melting snow increases the water flow, making it a powerful and awe-inspiring sight.
