Gavazan, also known as the Swinging Column, stands as a testament to medieval Armenian architectural and engineering ingenuity. Located in the Syunik Province, near the Tatev Monastery, this monument dates back to the 10th century. The pillar was designed to sway with even the smallest seismic activity, acting as an early warning system for earthquakes. Crafted from local limestone, the 8-meter tall octagonal column is topped with a khachkar, an Armenian cross-stone. The column is divided into three compositional parts: a plinth, a pillar, and a cornice. The lower part features a movable hinge connected to the stone of the lower step, allowing it to swing. Legend has it that the swaying of the Gavazan terrified invaders. Visitors are drawn to the site not only for its historical and engineering significance but also for the tranquil atmosphere and breathtaking views of the surrounding Vorotan Gorge. The Tatev Monastery, a significant spiritual and educational center in medieval Armenia, is located nearby.
