    Walking

    Freedom Square is centrally located and easily accessible on foot from many points in downtown Yerevan. From Republic Square, walk north along Abovyan Street, then turn left onto Tumanyan Street. The square will be on your right, about a 5-minute walk. No costs involved.

    Yerevan's public transportation system includes buses, minibuses, trolleybuses, and a metro. The nearest metro station to Freedom Square is Republic Square.     Freedom Square, located in the Kentron district of Yerevan, is more than just a public space; it's a vibrant symbol of Armenia's history, culture, and its enduring pursuit of freedom. Flanked by the Alexander Spendiaryan Opera and Ballet Theater, the square serves as a focal point for both locals and tourists. Originally named Theatre Square during the Soviet era, it was renamed Freedom Square in 1991 to commemorate Armenia's independence. Since 1988, the square has been a gathering place for demonstrations and cultural events. Key historical events have taken place here, including mass demonstrations during the Karabakh movement, which advocated for the unification of Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. In the aftermath of the disputed 2008 presidential election, the square was occupied by protestors. The square is adorned with statues of prominent Armenian cultural figures, Hovhannes Tumanyan and Alexander Spendiaryan. Swan Lake, an artificial reservoir reminiscent of Lake Sevan, is located adjacent to the square.
