Discover more about Cascade Complex

The Cascade Complex in Yerevan is more than just a giant stairway; it's a vibrant fusion of art, architecture, and natural beauty. Conceived by architect Alexander Tamanyan in the 1920s, the project aimed to connect the northern and central parts of Yerevan with cascading waterfalls and gardens. However, the initial plan was largely forgotten until the late 1970s when it was revived by architect Jim Torosyan. Construction began in the 1980s but was interrupted by the 1988 earthquake and the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2002, the Cafesjian Museum Foundation initiated the restoration, transforming it into an arts center. The complex features 572 steps, with a 15-degree incline. Inside, escalators provide an alternative to climbing, leading to various levels of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. The outdoor area is open 24/7, allowing visitors to admire the sculptures and enjoy the city views at any time. The Cafesjian Center for the Arts hosts a diverse collection of modern art. The Cascade also serves as a cultural hub, hosting events and performances. From the top, visitors can see the Memorial of the 50th anniversary of Soviet Armenia.
