Discover more about Sasuntsi Davit Statue

Dominating the square in front of Yerevan's central railway station, the Sasuntsi Davit Statue is more than just a monument; it's a powerful representation of Armenian identity and spirit. Created by sculptor Yervand Kochar, the copper statue portrays David of Sassoun, the legendary hero from the Armenian epic 'Daredevils of Sassoun,' mounted on his horse, Kurkik Jalali, and forever poised to strike down his enemies with his sword, Tur Ketsaki. The statue's history is as compelling as the epic it represents. The idea for a monument to David of Sassoun emerged in the late 1930s, coinciding with the 1000th-anniversary celebrations of the epic. The first version of the statue was erected in 1939 but was later destroyed in 1941, and Kochar was arrested. The current restored statue was inaugurated on December 3, 1959. The statue stands on a basalt base designed to resemble natural rock formations, rising from a circular reflecting pool. Water flows from beneath the horse's hooves into the basin, symbolizing the overflowing patience of the Armenian people. The statue has become a beloved symbol of Yerevan and a national monument, embodying the struggle for independence, justice, and unwavering national pride.
