Discover more about Sevan Island

Sevan Island, or more accurately, the Sevan Peninsula, is a testament to Armenia's rich history and the captivating beauty of Lake Sevan. Once an island, it transformed into a peninsula due to the artificial draining of Lake Sevan during the Stalin era. This unintentional consequence revealed a land bridge, connecting the island to the mainland. The island is most famous for the Sevanavank Monastery, founded in 874 AD by Princess Mariam. The monastery was initially intended for monks who had sinned. Today, the monastery consists of two churches, Surb Arakelots (Church of the Apostles) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Church of the Virgin). Climbing the stairs to the monastery rewards visitors with panoramic views of Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. The lake's colors shift with the weather, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Besides the monastery, the island offers tranquil walking paths and the chance to taste fresh fish from the lake in nearby eateries. The surrounding area is part of Sevan National Park, known for its diverse wildlife. The island's history, natural beauty, and serene atmosphere combine to create an unforgettable experience.
