Gndevank Monastery, an Armenian architectural jewel, is located near Gndevaz village in the Vayots Dzor Province. Princess Sofia of Syunik founded the monastery in 936 AD, envisioning it as a spiritual refuge. The monastery was named in honor of Supan Gnduni, a martyr of the Armenian Church. Legend says that Princess Sofia built the monastery to protect the local population from robber attacks.The monastery's architecture showcases the craftsmanship of its time, with intricate stone carvings and frescoes. The main church, Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), features traditional Armenian architectural elements, including decorative carvings and ornate khachkars (cross-stones). Inside the church, traces of frescoes remain, including a preserved image of Christ. Reliefs of the four Evangelists' symbols are carved into the interior of the dome. The monastery courtyard contains khachkars dating from the 10th to 16th centuries and cradle-shaped tombstones of the same period.Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the medieval architecture, and appreciate the serene ambiance. The monastery's remote location offers tranquility away from city life, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in the beauty and history of the site.
