Discover more about Republic Square

Republic Square, known locally as Hraparak ("the square"), is the vibrant heart of Yerevan, Armenia. Designed by Alexander Tamanian in 1924, its construction spanned several decades, with the final building completed in 1977. The square is renowned for its stunning architectural ensemble, built in the neoclassical style and incorporating Armenian motifs. The square is divided into two sections: an oval roundabout adorned with a stone mosaic resembling a traditional Armenian rug, and a trapezoid-shaped area featuring the musical fountains. These fountains, renovated in 2007, offer captivating light and music shows from spring to fall, drawing locals and tourists alike. The fountain shows typically begin in the evening and last for approximately 3 hours. Five significant buildings encircle the square: the Government House with its iconic clock tower, the History Museum of Armenia, the National Gallery of Armenia, the Central Post Office, and the Armenia Marriott Hotel. These buildings are primarily constructed of pink and yellow tuff stone, a volcanic rock that gives Yerevan its characteristic "pink city" glow. During the Soviet era, the square was named after Lenin, and a statue of him stood there until Armenia's independence. Today, Republic Square is a hub of urban life, hosting state concerts and celebrations. It's also home to the "Yot Ahpyur" (Seven Springs) drinking fountain, built in 1965, which also functions as a sundial.
