Aghoghlan Monastery, alternatively known as Tsitsernavank, is an ancient monastic complex with a rich and layered history. Situated in the Kashatagh region, within the Lachin district of Azerbaijan, its origins trace back to the 5th and 6th centuries when it was established as an Albanian monastery. Over the centuries, the monastery has endured numerous challenges, including avalanches and destruction, leading to its reconstruction and adaptation into a church-style monastery. The architecture of Aghoghlan Monastery reflects its long and complex history. The original foundation has been preserved, with newer walls built upon it. Following restoration, the monastery became recognized as a remarkable example of Albanian-period architecture within Azerbaijani history. The structure measures 25 meters in length and 12.5 meters in width. Inside, two rows of eight square-shaped pylons divide the space into three sections. Historically, the monastery held relics of St. George the Dragon-Slayer and was an important religious center. The name Tsitsernavank has two interpretations: one links it to the Armenian word for "little finger" (tsitsern), referencing a relic of St. George; the other connects it to the word "swallow" (tsitsernak), possibly due to swallows nesting in the ruins. In more recent times, the monastery was occupied and underwent architectural changes. The surrounding area was regained by Azerbaijan in December 2020. Today, Aghoghlan Monastery stands as a symbol of the region's intricate past, bearing witness to the passage of time and the shifts in cultural influence.
