Discover more about Horomayri

Horomayri Monastery, a remarkable testament to Armenia's rich historical and religious heritage, is located near the village of Odzun in the Lori Province. This unique monastic complex is built into the cliffs of the Debed Canyon, offering visitors a breathtaking blend of ancient architecture and stunning natural landscapes. The monastery is divided into two main sections: the upper monastery, perched on the edge of the plateau, and the lower monastery, nestled in the gorge below. The surviving structures, dating back to the 12th and 14th centuries, showcase the intricate stone carvings and architectural styles of the time. Legend has it that the first church was built in the 7th century by Byzantine Emperor Heraclius. Another story suggests a Greek Christian named Vasid founded the monastery after converting to Armenian Christianity. The name 'Horomayr' combines 'horom' (referring to people of Greek origin) and 'ayr' (cave). The main church of the lower monastery, St. Nshan (Holy Sign), was built in 1187 and topped with a bell tower in 1290. The church features a high relief depicting Jesus Christ. The upper monastery consists of two churches and a narthex, showcasing a unique blend of felsite and dark grey basalt stones. Exploring the monastery grounds offers hiking trails and panoramic views of the Debed Canyon.
