Makaravank Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Treasure

Makaravank Monastery, located in the Tavush region, stands as a testament to Armenia's rich medieval heritage. The complex, dating back to the 10th-13th centuries, is nestled on the wooded slopes of Mount Paytatap, near the village of Achajur. Its location, about 150 km from Yerevan, offers a tranquil escape into nature and history. The monastery comprises several structures, including three churches, a narthex (gavit), and a relics house. The buildings are constructed from a unique blend of pink andesite, red tuff, and greenish stones, creating a harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape. The main church, built in 1205, features intricate carvings, including a sundial and a dove on its southern facade. Inside, the altar dais showcases geometric ornaments, floral motifs, and figures of animals, birds, sphinxes, and sirens. The Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) church, built in 1198, stands out with its white stone construction. The narthex, constructed in 1207, features sculptures of a sphinx and a lion attacking a bull. The complex was once enclosed by fortress walls, with remnants still visible today. Makaravank also served as an important educational center, housing a theological school and a scriptorium where manuscripts were copied and preserved. Legends surround the monastery's origins, including a tale of a monk named Makar who built the church with his son.
